"Therefore the law is Holy, and the Commandment Holy and just and good." (Romans 7:12 N.K.J.V)
The first four are our duty to God:
1) No other gods. A god may be an image, an automobile, a ring, a job - anything that we put ahead of our God.
2) No image-worship.
3) Not to take His name in vain. This commandment forbids not only swearing, but any act or practice of our lives that costs reproach upon the name of Jesus.
4) REMEMBER the seventh-day Sabbath given in Eden as a memorial to God's Creatorship of this earth and the universe. It is the keeping of this commandment above the other nine which shows our public recognition of God's right in our lives as our Creator and Redeemer. (Exod. 20:8-11; Ezek. 20:12-20)
The last six show our duty to our neighbour and family:
5) Honor parents. A true Christian will be obedient to parents as long as this does not confilct with obedience to God. (Eph. 6:11) He will consider it a privilege to care for his parents in old age.
6) No murder or hatred permitted. The body temple is not to be destroyed by impure habits. (1 Cor. 3:17)
7) No acts of impurity are to be committed by the Christian. Impure thoughts and the very appearence of evil are to be shunned. The Christian must be an example in purity. (Matt. 5:28; 1 Thess. 5:22) Marriage, however, is honorable in all and the close physical union of husband and wife helps to shut out worldly temptations. Christians should not separate from unbeliving spoises unless their marriage proscribes their obedience to God. (1 Cor. 7:13-15)
8) No robbery. God forbids taking that which belong rightfully to another, whether it be property or personal credit. All debts to God and man must be settled.
9) No deception. This commandment forbids all acts with intent to deceive in any manner or to present another in a wrong light.
10) No coveting. This commandment is a safeguard against breaking the other nine. It destroy the very roots of sin.
